Benefits of Vitamin K
Do you know the benefits of vitamin K?
When you think about vitamins, vitamin K probably doesn’t pop up. It’s not well-known like vitamin C. But you still need it. Vitamin K: - Helps produce prothrombin, which is necessary
for blood clotting. - Aids in bone formation and repair (may prevent osteoporosis).
- Promotes healthy liver function by converting glucose to glycogen.
- And helps free up calcium to be used in the bone-building process.
Actually, there are 3 types of vitamin K. Let’s focus on dietary vitamin K, which is known as vitamin K1.
Foods High in Vitamin K
Hope you like veggies...
- kale (boiled)
- spinach (boiled)
- collard greens (boiled)
- Brussel sprouts (boiled)
- broccoli (steamed)
All make an excellent dinner side dish.
Do You Need a Vitamin K Supplement?
First, a precaution. Consult your doctor if you take blood-thinning drugs (ex: vitamin k and coumadin). This combo can interfere with each other. Recommendation: Antiobiotics increase the need for supplemental vitamin K. They kill the bacteria that are needed to synthesize vitamin K. Antibiotics also interfere with absorption. Vitamin K deficency may also be caused by poor diet, Crohn’s disease, and liver disease.
