Beta Carotene Benefits
Beta carotene benefits are vitamin A benefits. The liver converts beta carotene into vitamin A. It is the most well-known of the carotene family. Other members include alpha-carotene and lycopene. Beta carotene boosts your immune system. It has powerful antioxidant disease-fighting qualities. A 1997 article in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition trumpeted beta carotene. Beta carotene, it was found, stimulates your immune system to target and destroy cancer cells. It acts as a cancer alarm system.
Is Beta Carotene Good for Acne?
Yes, beta carotene prevents many skin disorders including acne. That's a secondary benefit; it slows aging and helps you look good.
Foods with Beta Carotene
Red, orange, yellow, and dark green fruits and vegetables:
- carrots
- sweet potatoes
- spinach
- cilantro
- cantaloupe
There's no such thing as excessive beta carotene though your skin may turn slightly orange if you consume a huge amount.
Precautions - Safety First
If you have diabetes or hypothyroidism, it’s possible that your body cannot convert beta carotene into vitamin A.
Also, a 2003 study in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute found that people who took beta carotene supplements and who smoked and drank alcohol were 2x as likely to develop colon cancer.
Consult your doctor first if either of these conditions apply to you.
How to Get More Beta Carotene
Most multi-nutrient supplements contain beta carotene. Look for natural beta carotene and get proof of it. It’s more expensive since testing has found it superior to the synthetic alternative.
