Biotin benefits...ummmm...what is biotin again?
It’s a water-soluble B-complex vitamin. What does it do? Biotin aids in cell growth, fatty acid production, and in carbohydrate, fat, and protein metabolism. Besides all those important things, an adequate supply of biotin is needed for healthy hair and skin. It's been said that balding may be reversed with extra biotin, but there is scant supporting evidence.
Diseases Caused by Biotin Deficiency
A lack of biotin is rare because your intestines can actually produce biotin from certain foods (Swiss chard, tomatoes, romaine lettuce, carrots). However, if for some reason you are deficient you may face:
- anemia
- depression
- hair loss
- insomnia
- loss of appetite
Infants who lack biotin may develop a dry, scaly scalp.
Biotin Supplements Good?
Taking a biotin-only supplement is unheard of. But many multi-nutrient supplements contain biotin as one of a range of nutrients.
