Choline Benefits
Few people know about choline benefits.
Choline is a chemical that’s close to the B-complex vitamins; it’s close but not actually considered one. Scientists are still learning how your body uses choline and how it interacts with other nutrients. Choline works well with folate and methionine.
Good for the body?
Yes, choline has been shown to prevent fat from accumulating in the liver...it can even reverse damage to the liver. Research into choline’s power to prevent memory loss with aging is also promising. Choline may also help lower cholesterol and protect against some cancers, but there is only preliminary research in these areas.
Sources of Choline
Breast milk is high in choline. Researchers found that choline intake in mothers is essential to a baby's brain development.
Eat these foods:
- egg yolks
- soybeans
- butter
- cauliflower
- peanut butter
It’s possible to get too much choline---anything above 350 mg a day is too much. Low blood pressure, diarrhea, and fishy body odor can result.
Choline Supplements - What to Know
As mentioned before, choline complements the nutrients folate and methionine; look for a multi-nutrient supplement that includes all three.
