Health Benefits of Vitamin C
Know all the health benefits of vitamin C?
Vitamin C (also called Ascorbic Acid) is an antioxidant that’s required for about 300 metabolic fuctions:
- tissue growth and collagen formation
- healing wounds, burns, and broken bones
- adrenal gland function
- healthy gums and teeth
- regulating good and bad cholesterol
It also helps protect against harmful pollution. Vitamin C combines with toxic substances, like heavy metals, and neutralizes them so that they can be eliminated from the body.
Foods High in Vitamin C
Vitamin C is found in berries, citrus fruits, and green veggies. You can get a good amount from the following foods:
- papayas
- red bell peppers
- steamed broccoli
- oranges
- strawberries
We all grew up believing orange juice was a great source of vitamin C. And it is. But only if it’s freshly squeezed or has been processed without heating.
Side Effects of Vitamin C
Supplemental vitamin C is generally safe. However, two precautions:
- Don’t take vitamin c and aspirin together in large doses. It may cause stomach irritation and lead to ulcers.
- Avoid chewable vitamin C supplements; they damage tooth enamel.
Vitamin C in a Supplement
Vitamin C works synergistically with both vitamin E and beta carotene, which means that taking them together provides a stronger benefit. So I recommend taking a supplement that contains all three.
